What attracted you to GSV?

I was attracted to GSV by the four tenets. Although spirituality and simplicity sounding a bit intimidating at first it was a challenge I was very willing to try out. I also really liked that GSV is a small program where I could have more personal interaction with the whole program and its directors.

Where are you serving/what kind of work are you doing?

I am currently serving my 2nd year as a volunteer at Collier High School in Wickatunk, NJ. I serve as one of the Spanish teachers in the high school working with emotionally and behaviorally disturbed youth. Aside from teaching I also take up any other responsibilities around the school like lunch duties, substitute teaching, office work and school event planning.

How have you seen personal growth thus far as a result of your experience (site placement/community) with GSV?

Even though my position is as a teacher, I feel like I am learning so much more than I teach. I’ve learned about myself, my community, the youth I work with and the work that I do. All of this has helped in my personal growth because I have been exposed to so many different situations and have become aware of the impact I have. I’ve developed a better sense of who I am, what I love to do and who I can use my talents to serve others.

What is the best or most surprising part about your volunteer year so far?

The best part in my service is the definitely the kids (or excuse me, the young adults) and the staff at the high school. They both make every day a new adventure!

Any advice for someone considering post-graduate service?

Take some time to listen to that calling to do service. If you feel it lies with GSV take a chance and do it!...you never know you might love it so much you end up doing a second year like me!
