GSV Spotlight
What attracted you to GSV?
GSV’s mission – to work with children, women, and adolescents who are affected by poverty and neglect – struck a personal chord. I had previously done service with abandoned children in Romania and wanted to continue my service work through a program that was devoted specifically to children and adolescents who have experienced neglect.
Where are you serving/what kind of work are you doing?
I’m serving at the Therapeutic Foster Boarding Home, working with special needs children and adolescents in foster care.
How have you seen personal growth thus far as a result of your experience (site placement/community) with GSV?
I often have to think quickly, critically, and act effectively in crises and emergencies, and I have become progressively better at providing resolutions in these situations.
What is the best or most surprising part about your volunteer year so far?
I’m glad that I’m able to utilize my skills as a case manager for the NYC Dept. of Health’s Infant Mortality Reduction Initiative at my agency. I’ve been able to apply my knowledge and interest in public health to the lives of the adolescents I work with.
Any advice for someone considering post-graduate service?
Do it! And don’t be afraid to stay local – urban centers like NYC and LA are microcosms of the issues faced by individuals in other regions of the world.
